Expert Q&A: Masonry
If your bricks and mortar are looking a little dingy or are in need of some repair, you’ve come to the right place! In this segment of The Marc and Mandy Show: Expert Q&A, Michael Farnum from Lment Stone answers questions about the repair and care of stone walls with masonry.
Q: How do I know when it’s time to call a mason to repair or restore my old stone wall?
Michael Farnum: Structures build with natural stone are designed to have the mortar replaced every 50 years or so. If you have an older property, with a stone foundation that is showing signs of cracking, crumbling, missing stones, or movement, then it’s time call a professional mason for the restoration experience.
Q: Is there any way I can take care of these concerns affordably?
Michael Farnum: If masonry walls are cared for properly over the years, they will last for centuries with minor restoration. Problems arise when walls are neglected or repaired improperly. This can lead to the need for major restoration and rebuilding. Remember the 50 year rule and take care of problems as soon as you see them. If you have concerns about your stone foundation or retaining wall, please note that they can be restored in sections, unlike concrete, which can be more costly and time consuming to repair.
