Expert Q&A: Treating Knee Ostioarthritis
Today on The Marc and Mandy Show: Ask An Expert, Jessica Tsang from Direct Health Solutions gives expert answers about treating knee osteoarthritis.
Q: What options are there to treat knee osteoarthritis?
Jessica Tsang: The most important thing you can do to treat knee osteoarthritis is physiotherapy. After that, we commonly prescribe medications or supplements that can help manage the pain. This includes oral medication, maybe topical ointments, and maybe steroid injections. More recently, we’ve been using regenerative medicine techniques to help stop, or even reverse, damage in the joint.
Q: What is regenerative medicine?
JT: Regenerative medicine includes techniques that can stimulate healing. So this includes things like Prolotherapy and Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP). With Prolotherapy, we actually inject the solution into the area to create inflammation and cause the healing process to start. With PRP, we actually take part of your blood, spin it down, extract the growth factors, and inject it back into the area that we want to heal. With this we can regenerate tissues and heal new and old injuries.
Q: What other injuries can be treated by Prolotherapy or Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)?
JT: The possibilities are limitless. We’ve used Prolotherapy and PRP to treat conditions all over the body, including joint laxity, osteoarthritis, tendonitis, and muscle and ligament tears. The most common conditions we’ve treated are golfer’s elbow, tennis elbow, shoulder and rotator cuff tears, knee osteoarthritis, and low back pain.
