Eye Care Options
In this episode of The Marc and Mandy Show, Marc learns more about eye care with Dr. Ellen Anderson from Western Laser Eye Associates.
Marc: We have Ellen from Western Laser Eye Associates and she’s here to talk to us about eye care. So, I find that when you’re shopping for glasses or when you’re shopping for anything eye care, whether it’s contacts or laser, a lot of times you have to go to multiple different places. Alternatively, Western Laser is a little different, isn’t it that’s correct?
Dr. Ellen Anderson: We’re a blended optometry-ophthalmology practice. And if you don’t know the difference, an ophthalmologist has a medical degree an MD. So, I’ve gone to medical school and rotated through a number of different surgical and other subspecialties. The optometrists also go to graduate degree after undergrad and they don’t do surgery, but they focus more on glasses and contact lenses.
Marc: So how does it work? When I walk into Western Laser, do I automatically then get asked if I want glasses or i want laser or how does the process work?
Ellen: So, that’s completely individualized to the patient. In fact, some people don’t want glasses or laser they just want an eye health check. So, depending on what the patient’s requesting, they may go to the optometrist first. If they’re looking for glasses and then the patients who are interested in laser vision correction, we send them through about a two hour set of tests and examinations to determine if they’re a good candidate. What about for somebody that wants you know maybe the convenience of laser but still likes the fashion statement of glasses. So, I have had patients that will remake their glasses without a prescription. So, they can wear them from time to time after laser vision correction if they like them for a fashion statement. Also, the glasses do kind of help with dry eye if it’s real windy out. So, I always tell people to wear sunglasses regardless when they’re outside so there is a role for eyewear after laser vision correction.
