How to Organize Your Garage
Your garage is meant to store your vehicles and various other things that you don’t want in the house but it often ends up storing a lot more then you had intended. Whether your garage is big or small, there are lots of different ways to organize it. Here are just a few to get you started.
1. Add a Tool Rack:
– A tool rack in a corner will give you easy storage for rakes and other long handled items. You can either buy one or make it yourself. If you are so inclined, put wheels on the bottom so the rack is easy to move.
2. Use that Wall Space:
– One does not need to spend a lot of money in order to have an organized garage. You can DIY it and save yourself some money, plus you get to make it exactly how YOU want it. Adding a few shelves will add instant storage on an empty wall and clear up some floor space. Add a few plastic bins for smaller items.
3. Hang What You Can:
– One tip to keeping your garage clean is having a place to hang your things. Hanging items takes up very little or even no floor space. Even larger items like bicycles can be hung out of the way when not in use.
4. Use Your Ceiling:
– One of the best places to utilize is the ceiling. This is especially great for storing seasonal items like holiday decorations or camping supplies off-season. You can get inexpensive sliding storage systems that hang from the ceiling and give you extra room on your floor and walls.
5. Build a Mud Room:
– Mud rooms are great. A few DIY locker cabinets and some cheap canvas totes will give you the perfect area to keep your coats and muddy foot-wear from going into the house. Additionally, a mud room will save you from dirty floors in the house when it is wet and mucky outside.
6. Update Your Garage Doors for Cheap:
– Just adding a little style to your garage doors will instantly give your garage a whole new look. Lots of home improvement stores have easy to install kits that will let you transform your doors.
7. Magnet Strips:
– If you have lots of small tools and small bits, just add a few magnetic stripes to the wall or wherever you have room. The strip will keep your bits and small tools handy and organized for when you need them.
8. Make a Tape Dispenser:
– You can organize various rolls of tape by making your own tape dispenser that can mount to a wall and keep your tapes organized.
9. Organize Your Paints and Supplies:
– All you need is a few mason jars and a pegboard. Put leftover paint in the mason jars. Label the lids with the color of the paint in the jar for quick patch-ups in the future. Pegboards are great for keeping paintbrushes and tools organized and easy to find.
10. Plastic Tubs:
– When you organize, it is imperative that you group together things that are in similar categories. This will make sure that you can find things in a hurry. Plastic tubs will help you do that. Just make sure to label them correctly and stack them neatly.
11. Use Your Studs:
– No, we don’t mean your spouse or boyfriend! We’re talking wall studs. If the garage walls are partially unfinished, you can use the wall studs to hang heavier items or add a few boards to the front to make a half shelf unit.
12. Hang Jars Under Shelves:
– Keep nails, screws and other small items organized is easy when you take empty plastic jars and mount them underneath shelving. Just screw the lids on under the shelving and the jars screws onto the lid.
