Mandy: I’m here at Roger Watson Jewellers, I’m with owner John Watson, and we’re talking about jewelry pieces for men today. Now, John you pulled out this stunning piece. Talk to me a little bit about it.

Roger Watson: Well, there’s a little bit of a misconception that men don’t really like jewelry. It’s not the case. For women only, we have a really cool selection of things. But for guys as well, we’ve made some pretty amazing stuff and I have one of those pieces right here. You’ll notice that it’s a cool piece. And that’s what we love to do, we love to create something that’s going to be what our client wants and loves, and sometimes we get an opportunity to create some pretty amazing stuff.

Mandy: Did the client come in with this concept?

Roger Watson: No, they had an idea that they wanted something large and in charge, but we always will sit down and develop these concepts together. And that often starts with just finding the right stones and then going from there. 

Mandy: So, when we’re talking jewelry for men, what do you find are the most common pieces?

Roger Watson: A really nice wedding band is obviously a go-to, and that’s what I make the most of. We’ve got some really cool men’s wedding band styles and we use an ancient Japanese metal folding technique called mokume-gane to manufacture bands with hand faceting. So all sorts of different stuff that’s really interesting and really clean. And then we get to make some conceptual pieces as well.
