Tips for Finding a Therapist
In this segment of The Marc and Mandy Show: Your Wellness Fix, Tiffany Petite from Virtuous Circle Counselling Calgary shares tips for find the right therapist for you.
Mandy: Going to see a counsellor or therapist for the first time can be really intimidating. I have Tiffany from Virtuous Circle Counselling here to walk us through what we need to know to get started. All right, so where do we even begin?
Tiffany Petite: Well, great question. Oftentimes, the hardest part is reaching out for the first time. While you made the decision to get counselling or therapy, finding the right fit is really key in the whole experience. So, it’s important to be choosy. Think about doing some research through the web. You might actually find somebody through word of mouth. You might ask a friend if they’ve seen somebody. Oftentimes, therapists offer free consultation, so that’s an opportunity to come prepared with some questions and see if it’s a fit.
Mandy: When you start seeing a therapist, is there a timeframe you should give to see if it is a good fit?
Tiffany Petite: Give it a couple of sessions, but probably around the third session you should probably see whether or not you’re on the same page. You kind of feel like maybe some of that relationship’s building. And if it’s not, it’s okay to terminate the relationship and consider looking for somebody else who might be more suitable for your needs.
