Potato Hacks We Love
In addition to being an integral food staple for many regions around the world, potatoes pack quite the nutritional punch. They are naturally gluten-free, loaded with potassium, vitamin B6, and contain nearly half of your daily value of vitamin C. With all this in mind, you probably want to get the most out of your potatoes. We’ve got four hacks to help you do just that.
To Keep Them Mold-free
Did you know that properly stored potatoes can last up to four months? To ensure a longer shelf life, store your potatoes in a cool, dry area, far away from apples and onions. Store them with a knob of ginger for added antibacterial protection.
To Peel Them Faster
Make an incision all the way around the middle of the potato, ensuring you’re not cutting too deep, just enough to affect the skin. Then, pour boiling water over them, let them cook, and once they’ve reached the desired tenderness, run them under cold water. After this, you should be able to simply pull the skin off of the potato, no elbow grease necessary.
To Steam Them Faster
If you don’t want to bother with the stovetop, try steaming them in the microwave for faster results. Simply add a couple of tablespoons of water before microwaving to keep your potatoes from drying out.
To Make Healthier Chips and Fries
For faster (and healthier) dried potato foods, such as chips and fries, make them in the microwave. Simply prep them the way you usually would, add a conservative amount of oil and salt, and let them crisp up in the microwave.
