DIY Embellished Accent Pillow
Dear Marc:
I want a fun project to do this weekend! I have these taupe pillow covers that could use a little TLC. Do you have a technique that would help me bring them back to life?

Dear Mary:
Great question! The old saying, “out with the old and in with the new” dates itself as up-cycling gains in popularity with homeowners. We find ourselves thinking twice before heading to the garbage bin with our outdated belongings.
One of my all time favourite ways to up-cycle accent pillows is to paint them. Yes, that’s right, I said “paint”. Did you know that there are special paints that can be purchased at craft stores that allow you to paint fabric? And best of all, if you use a pillow with a pattern, you don’t have to be artistic! Just paint within the lines and it will look fantastic.

Step 1:
Choose a pillow cover (100% Natural or Natural Blend Fabric) with an interesting design or pattern. Wash and dry the pillow cover (without using fabric softener). Once dry, insert a piece of cardboard inside the pillow cover to protect opposing sides from paint seepage.
Step 2:
Highlight specific areas of the cover’s design or pattern with paint.
OPTIONAL:
Embellish the pillow cover by adding decorative rhinestones with a Rhinestone Setter Hot-Fix Applicator Wand.
Step 3:
Insert a pillow inside the cover and display it on a chair.
