Celebrity Access: Sarah Richardson
Being a professional interior designer may seem like a pipe dream, but today on the show, we chat with someone who is living that exact dream. On this episode of The Marc and Mandy Show, Sarah Richardson from HGTV’s Sarah Off The Grid shares with Christine Da Costa her start in interior design. Check out the video above or keep reading for their Q&A.
Christine Da Costa: I’m with Sarah Richardson from Sarah Off The Grid. How did you get your start in interior design?
Sarah Richardson: Oh my gosh, that was so long ago. That was last century. I started working behind the scenes on a TV show in 1995. And I was a prop stylist. I started working behind the scenes and then shortly after I was asked to do a favour for somebody and show. How to do a decorative art project on a life network TV show. And that led to fifty more sort of craft and DIY segments. And while I continued to work behind the scenes as a prop stylist, then as a set decorator, I pitched my own show. Which makes it sound so easy and like that was that.
CDC: What would you tell your 20–year–old self today?
SR: I guess I would tell my 20–year–old self that it would all be okay and I would be doing something creative, because my 20 year old self was trying to get a job doing something in a creative industry and it was really really hard to break in. And I think I had thoughts and dreams of what I might love to do and it seemed so far beyond my reach and my grasp. And yet to stand here today and think wow it was possible. So I would tell my 20–year–old self that anything is possible. If you can dream it, if you can imagine it, and if you give it everything you’ve got every day, you never know how it might turn out.
CDC: You talked a lot about collaboration, and I think that’s one of your most positive traits, but what other character trait do you have that you feel has helped with your success?
SR: I think I couldn’t do what I’m doing if I wasn’t an optimist. And I think that the benchmark for how I approach problems and projects is that I believe there’s always a solution. And I decided early on that I wasn’t going to build an awareness and a following by throwing temper tantrums when things went wrong. I’m always thinking about where are we going and how are we gonna get there and so I think having an optimistic outlook and feeling, like there’s always a solution, is the only way to go.
