Zumba
Getting a little bored with your morning jog or your mid-day gym session? Zumba is a great way to shake things up a little, by injecting your workout with fun and music. Combining Latin dance and aerobic movements, Zumba is a great way to burn calories, tone your physique and improve your confidence.
Surfset
Surfset started out as an idea pitched to the TV show, Shark Tank, after which it took of in the United States and later in Canada. The workout involves balancing on a surf board which is supported by three stability balls and classes are tailored to target balance (yoga and flexibility), burn (cardio), build (muscles) or blend (all three).
Spinning
Spinning mainly targets and strengthens the muscles in your lower body and will likely leave your legs feeling like jelly after your first few classes – you have be warned! But if you can get past the jelly-legs, spinning, or indoor cycling, is a great way to increase your endurance and burn calories. The group format can provide excellent motivation while also allowing individuals to cycle at differing intensities.
Pole Dancing
In the past, pole dancing hasn’t had the best rep. It was an activity typically associated with strip clubs and debauchery – that is until the mid 2000s, when it found its way into the world of fitness. Now, pole dancing is recognized as a form of non-sexual expression and a fun and refreshing way to work out. Pole dancing for exercise increases core strength, general body strength and confidence.
Aerial Yoga
So long as you don’t mind heights, aerial yoga is a creative, not to mention visually impressive, alternative to downward dog-ing on the mat. Aerial yoga involves deep stretching, which promotes flexibility and strength. It is also said to decrease back pain and help with digestion.
Pound
Pound combines cardio and strength training with rhythmic drumming. In addition to being a great way to release some of that pent up stress, pound classes are said to help with coordination, agility, caloric burn and flexibility.
Kick boxing
This high energy, body-engaging workout is a great way to burn calories and fat, particularly stubborn belly fat that’s associated with heightened risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer. This workout also engages your core, which will improve your coordination and balance, while toning the entire body.
